The marvellous folk at Brighton Unsigned have asked if I wouldn’t mind “scribing” some meaningful musings for their illustrious online printable beast of the Brighton Unsigned musical scene.

Now, I can see what they were thinking. That Pete Jones, 8 years at the helm of an unsigned live Brighton music show on Radio Reverb, live sessions every week and an absurdly large back catalogue in dodgy bedroom domestic CD burnt material, what wouldn’t he have to offer us in the realm of insight, thoughts, knowledge and opinion?

Well, I know they say they’ve heard the show, even been on it a couple of times, but have they actually listened to it whilst hearing? If there’s one thing we pride ourselves in more than anything else on my show, it’s the fact that we’re still going despite flying by the seat of our pants virtually every week & knowing extremely little about anything we’re attempting to talk about!! Ok, slight exaggeration, but you get the point.

I’m not “in the industry” as it were, not a real muso, not a writer, composer, singer, musician, not even a real “dj” in the clubby, “giggy”, “spin some discs” kind of a way, and so, as such have always felt either refreshingly different and separate from the pack, or immensely out of my depth and a complete charlatan, depending on how the wind of confidence and self belief is blowing (did I mention I am also a Gemini!). Which brings me naturally to this article, or so far, lack of. What can I offer you thirsty, hungry lovers of home grown glorious musical talent? What on earth can I comment on meaningfully and share?

Well, I think the main thread that has always run through the show and propelled me through the last 8 years of broadcasting, is an undying love and respect for the talent and music on offer in this town, and the ability to consistently offer it a suitable, credible platform for that talent to flourish. To find an audience, feel nurtured, loved, unjudged and to be able to breathe and grow. I feel very passionately that all the music we play on the show should find a wider audience and is, more often than not, of a more interesting and higher standard than a vast percentage of what is on offer through the majority of mainstream shows on offer to us as listeners or “consumers” if you will! This, incidentally, goes for a great number of specialist shows that Radio Reverb broadcasts and nurtures.

So, what might make for an interesting column here and make sense going forward, is to introduce you, article by article, to some of the artists and bands we’re currently playing on the show, to let you know who we’ve got coming in for sessions and where you might be able to go to hear them play. Or if you’re a musician/artist/band, how you can join us, share with us your music, your gig details and any relevant news you might have.

In the meantime, feel free to tune in to The Pete Jones Show, Radio Reverb, 97.2FM, or stream us live at www.radioreverb.com, 6pm-8pm Monday nights, repeated 12pm-2pm Fridays.

Pete Jones – Welcome aboard
